• Working Woods Scotland is a 3-day practical training course in homegrown hardwoods. It is based at the Scottish Wood sawmill in Fife.

The course brings together professionals from across the industry – from foresters and woodland managers, to sawmillers and woodworkers. We aim to bring together a diverse group of participants coming from different backgrounds and experiences within the sector, building links and encouraging trade and collaboration.

Many aspects of the hardwood industry will be covered (with some premium softwoods included, in particular larch and Douglas Fir). Attending the course you can expect to learn about silvicultural practices for timber production; grading and valuing standing timber and round logs; hardwood processing such as milling and kilning practises; and finding a market for your timber products.

    Course outline:

    Dates – Wednesday 7th – Friday 9th of May 2025

Day 1 – Background to forestry in Scotland; sawn timber and its uses, grading and valuing trees and logs.

Day 2 – In the forest; forest management, silviculture, species selections for different sites, harvesting.

Day 3 – Sawmilling; seasoning; measuring, grading, valuing, and marketing sawn timber.

Primary trainers – Kate Tuer, Andrew Macqueen, Jim Birley.

    Cost – £650

Course participants are selected from a range of applicants, including foresters, sawmillers, furniture makers, civil servants and others involved in forestry and timber.  We aim to bring together a group with a mixture of skills to ensure exchange of knowledge between participants (as well as from leaders to participants), and to encourage links continuing after the course. The WWS course is designed to encourage networking between industry members.
